Lesson 2: Operating Manuals

To accelerate relationship-building with your teammates, create and use operating manuals. The real value of an operating manual is sharing it with each of your teammates, through one-on-one conversation. This tool reinforces the resiliency of your relationships so that you can repair trust if conflict arises.

Lesson 3 case study: Jay Desai, PatientPint/Bamboo Health

Jay Desai, CEO/co-founder of PatientPing, now Bamboo Health, has shared his Operating Manual with teammates for years. Referring to his manual as a user guide, Desai implements the tool to align expectations (sometimes even during candidate interviews). As a result, he finds his teammates can do their best work easier.

With a foundation of strong relationships with each of your teammates, you are on your way to becoming a more complete manager. But, even with trust, your teammates won’t do their best work unless they’re clear what they’re working toward. Before devoting resources to pursuing and tracking a goal, be sure it’s a goal that’s truly worthy of commitment.

Module 3

Rather than telling your teammates what to do, empower them to figure it out on their own. This shift in mindset requires curiosity, and there are five coaching questions proven to help you stay curious and give less advice. Each time you ask a question, you’re becoming more coach-like and becoming a more complete manager.

Now with an understanding of the Complete Manager Equation, it’s time to put this knowledge into action with your teammates. First, focus on your own growth, then, develop a system to facilitate your teammates’ growth.
